Niger State Commisioner Of Education Hajiya Hannatu Jibrin Salihu, has disclosed that Government is still observing carefully, the risk of re-opening schools and putting in place post COVID-19 school reopening plans and strategies based on the current situation to ensure maximum caution.

The Commissioner, stated this yesterday at COVID-19 Response Inter- Sectoral Stakeholders meeting, held at Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre, Minna.

Hajiya Hannatu said that the main objective was to interact and brainstorm on the modalities and processes to be established in order to ensure adequate preparedness and readiness of schools for safe re-opening as well as resumption of academic and other ancillary activities without placing the health, safety, and security of learners , teachers , education managers and practitioners in jeopardy.

She noted that given the scope of the impact of COVID-19 on the education sector, the Ministry, responded swiftly with COVID-19 education contingency plan, with it’s robust conception and implementation that has impacted in the short term by getting children to aggressively learn through Radio Learning programmes across the state.

She concluded that the meeting will leverage on the experience of the inter- sectoral stakeholders in order for the Ministry to come up with strategies and work plan that will form the basis of agreeing to re-open the schools in line with the COVID-19 Task Force guidelines or otherwise.

In their various submissions, the Commisioners of Environment, Women Affairs, Health, Tertiary Science and Technology and Water Resources and Dams Development, Information and Culture as well as other stakeholders spoke extensively on the need for more awareness and other measures to be taken among individuals, parents and Students on the dangers of the Virus and the precautionary measures necessary to reduce to the bearest minimum its impact in the state.

In his closing remark, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry Of Education, Abubakar Aliyu thanked all for the support and role of the stakeholders in making recommendations on the way forward for the Ministry. He noted that all suggestions and recommendations will be summarised in the short term, medium term and long term policies to aid quality education delivery in the State.
